The hit series The Apothecary Diaries gets a new spinoff featuring fan-favourite character Xiaolan in The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story. Though born into poverty, Xiaolan was content with her simple life caring for her siblings. But out of desperation, her family was forced to make a terrible decision… Sent to the imperial palace as a servant, Xiaolan now spends her days washing laundry and tending to the consorts’ needs. She doesn’t mind her new lot in life—after all, there’s food!—and soon makes friends with another servant, a strange girl named Maomao. Can the two help each other as they find their way in the scheming, status-seeking society of the rear palace?

Originally a popular series of light novels, The Apothecary Diaries has become a major property amongst fans following its hit manga and anime adaptations. The anime in particular has been a major success with its third season currently airing and a movie set for release at the end of the year. Timed perfectly for these latest releases is this new manga spinoff focussing on Maomao’s close friend Xiaolan.
Xiaolan’s Story largely follows the same timeline of events as the main series, only this time from Xiaolan’s perspective. Most of the action focuses on her adjusting to life in the Imperial Palace and her concern for her family back home. Unlike Maomao, Xiaolan is not a naturally inquisitive person (though she does have a knack for gossip), so she does not find herself involved in the events of the rear palace the same way Maomao does.

Nevertheless, series creator Natsu Hyuuga still manages to use the events of the main story to delve deeper in Xiaolan’s character. Her empathetic side is shown early with the news of Lady Lihua’s newborn son dying sending into her into a state of grief over the thought of something similar happening to one of her siblings. We get to see more of her interactions with Maomao and it becomes clearer why the two form a tight friendship.
Illustrator Itsuki Nanao’s artwork fits perfectly with the style that Nekokurage established in the main manga. Having worked as a compiler with Nekokurage on the main series, it to be expected that she would be well versed with the world and characters. She brings a high level of energy to proceedings, and her work helps to enhance Xiaolan’s bright personality that drives the story forward.

Xiaolan’s Story is a fun addition to the already enduring Apothecary Diaries series. This is one longtime fans will immediately gravitate towards.
