Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Compact Comics Edition Vol. 1 – a digest collection revisiting the classic 90s TV show.

The landmark comic spinoff of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers gets a new compact release in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Compact Comics Edition Vol. 1. When Tommy Oliver joins the team as the newly freed Green Ranger, he struggles to regain the trust of his fellow Rangers—and himself—while balancing the pressures of high school, new friendships, and the lingering influence of Rita Repulsa. It’s not long before Rita enacts her boldest plan for global domination yet and the Rangers face a devastating new threat with the mysterious Black Dragon! Together they stand a chance, but the stakes are about to get higher as Billy and Tommy become unexpectedly pulled into a mysterious new dimension with no way home! Can the team rally together to save not only Angel Grove…but the entire world?

A worldwide phenomenon, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was one of the most popular shows of the 90s and resulted in a long running franchise. The original series was revisited in 2016 by Boom Studios in an ongoing comic written by Kyle Higgins. The series quickly garnered a strong following amongst dedicated Power Rangers fans for both its faithfulness to the original series and how bold it was in its storytelling (the comic was not subject to the same restrictions the original TV show was bound to after all).

Whilst there are all the familiar characters and a hint of the tongue-in-cheek humour that was present in the show, Higgins gives the series a higher sense of urgency and significantly raises the stakes. He has a great voice for the Rangers (arguably doing a better job of conveying them as teenagers than the show ever did) and whilst there is still an appropriate level of silliness with Rita Repulsa’s crew – Rita has an evil streak that far exceeds any of her 90s plans. This compact collection covers the opening two arcs of the series that includes the introduction of Lord Drakken – an evil alternate universe version of Tommy Oliver who quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the series.

Art is handled by Hendry Prasetya, Thony Silas and Jonathan Lam who very much understand the assignment at hand. The Power Ranger have arguably never looked cooler and the action is some of the best you’ll see in any superhero comics. The Zord battles are a particular standout, and the new character designs are also excellent (there’s a reason Lord Drakken has become as this popular).

This is a perfect showcase for a brilliant era of Power Rangers and an ideal entry point for newcomers.
