The latest film from Marvel Studios gets the behind-the-scenes treatment in Spider-Man: Brand New Day – The Art of The Movie. Four years have gone by since we last caught up with our friendly neighborhood hero. Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man is at the top of his game keeping New York City safe. Things are going well for our anonymous hero until an unusual trail of crimes pulls him into a web of mystery larger than he’s ever faced before. In order to take on what’s ahead, Spider-Man not only needs to be at the top of his physical and mental game, but he must also be prepared to face the repercussions of his past!
Hitting cinemas at the end of August, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been a smash hit critically and commercially. Dethroning Avengers: Endgame as the highest box office opening of all time, the film has been the talk of the summer and earned high praise from fans for its faithful portrayal of Spider-Man by Tom Holland. Only one month after its release, we now have the latest in Marvel’s Art of The Movie line that goes deep into the production of their films.
Brand New Day is the first MCU Spider-Man film where Spider-Man is undisputably the main hero. Whilst both The Punisher and Hulk are major players in the story, they never attempt to steal the spotlight (which Iron Man, Nick Fury and Doctor Strange have been guilty of in the past). This is a production that aimed to faithfully capture the spirit of the comic character which is very much reflected in this book. More than any other recent Spider-Man film, Brand New Day aims to capture the essence of Spider-Man, whether it’s through his quips, his attitude to crime fighting or the everyday struggles he goes through.
Those who have seen the film (or even just the trailers) will recognise the homages to classic Spider-Man covers over the years from the likes of Steve Ditko, Sal Buscema, Erik Larsen and more. This collection explores these tributes in depth whilst also looking at the different visual approaches the team creating the movie took that led to the eventual final product. Included amongst these features are costumes, character designs and even interviews with the crew.
This is a perfect companion piece to the film and a worthy shelf addition for serious Spider-Man fans. It is a book than fans will be returning to for years to come.
