A classic style Disney adventure hits UK stores for the first time in Mickey and The Amazing Lost Ocean. The world is finally at peace after years of war. Mickey, Minnie and Goofy now make their living as salvage hunters, exploring the wreckage of the old conflict in search of lost technology – all while fending off their old rival, Peg-Leg Pete. When a mysterious commission leads them to a strange cube buried deep beneath the ocean, they unwittingly uncover an artefact far more powerful than it appears, and a patron with hidden motives.
Disney has a rich history when it comes to comics in Europe that goes back several decades. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in particular have seen some of their most iconic adventures brought to life through a medley or legendary European creators. Now UK fans will get a chance to see some of these gems in the first of a new line of hardcover releases from Panini.
From an artistic standpoint in particular, Mickey and The Amazing Lost Ocean is a triumph. Silvio Camboni has been working on comics with Disney characters since the late 80s, so it’s safe to say he has a strong grip on Mickey Mouse and company. His natural flair for cartooning combined with his experience results in some of the most memorable pages featuring Disney characters you’ll see. But beyond his affinity for classic cartoon characters, the feel and depth of Camboni’s artwork is something to behold. The lush jungle and ocean backgrounds along with the steampunk aesthetic really elevates the comic to a whole other level.
Writer Denis-Pierre Filippi is also a veteran when it comes to bande dessinée. Particularly known for his work on children’s comic Gregory and The Gargoyles for Humanoids, he has proven to be highly adaptable over the years going from more mature comics like Muse with Terry Dodson to this Mickey Mouse adventure. This is not a throwaway narrative as Filippi delves into dystopian and ecological themes that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to encounter in a Disney comic whilst bringing all the fun and heart you’d expect.
Mickey and The Amazing Lost Ocean is a must have for devoted Disney fans and is a fun adventure comic to boot. This beautiful hardback deserves to be on many a fan’s shelf.
