Wolverine: Revenge – Greg Capullo returns to Marvel in a big way.

A star Marvel writer teams up with one of the most popular artists in the industry in Wolverine: Revenge. He’s been beaten! He’s been bloodied! But Logan only has one thought on his mind: revenge! Because the unspeakable has come to pass, and now Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Deadpool will pay!

Jonathan Hickman has been making waves since his return to Marvel in 2019. Already highly regarded for his previous work on Fantastic Four and Secret Wars, his revival of the X-Men and bestselling/Eisner nominated Ultimate Spider-Man series are some of the most important comics of the current era. Now he has joined together with superstar artist Greg Capullo who – after wrapping up his time at DC where he illustrated several highly acclaimed Batman comics written by Scott Snyder – makes his grand return to Marvel after a long absence.

Wolverine: Revenge is exactly what it says on the tin – a grim and gritty revenge thriller that sees Logan ruthlessly pursuing a group of superpowered enemies and former allies who have wiped out some of his closest friends. It’s not the first time the idea of Wolverine being in a grim alternate future has been explored. Days of Future Past, Old Man Logan and Wolverine: The End have all dabbled in the idea of Logan either being pushed to his limit with an aging/failing body or being in a situation where his friends and teammates have all been killed. But Hickman boils down some of these tropes to their core to produce a balls-to-the-wall revenge story with little left to the imagination.

It helps that Hickman lulls readers into thinking that it is a traditional adventure when Wolverine teams up with Captain America, Winter Soldier and Nick Fury to investigate the worldwide power outage caused by Magneto’s death. But things quickly go south when Cap and co are brutally wiped out by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants including a brainwashed Deadpool and Colossus. Hickman manages to build some high stakes whilst frequently keeping readers on their toes with some shocking surprises. This is all supported by Capullo’s stellar artwork. In many ways, this series is a showcase of his artistic abilities. With a story that is so action heavy, it helps to have an artist who knows how to effectively stage fight scenes and action set pieces which is definitely Capullo’s forte. Beyond that, it is just great to see him drawing X-Men characters again, His Wolverine, Omega Red and Deadpool depictions are particularly on point.

This is everything fans could want for an unrestricted Wolverine saga. Readers won’t want to miss two top-tier creators at the top of their game teaming together for the first time.
