If you ever wanted to step inside the mind of an artist, now is your chance. And whose mind could be better for stepping into than one of Britain’s most exciting contemporary artists, Jeremy Deller! Art is Magic is a gorgeous adventure through Jeremy’s career and works so far, stunningly produced and packed full of vibrant photographs and illustrations. Having hit the bestseller list with the hardback edition, this paperback edition is this summer’s arty “it” book.
In work that is playful, political and provocative, borrowing from many forms and produced over many mediums, Jeremy Deller enjoys critical acclaim in the UK and across the world. Art is Magic is the first book in which the artist reflects on the entirety of his career, his life and his art. Featuring a brand-new chapter of ‘things the artist forgot to put in the first time’, this beautifully and accessibly priced resized edition publishes in tandem with a new national art project by Jeremy Deller.
Even as a self-proclaimed art nerd, I went into this one with tentative curiosity and the lingering worry I was going to be stumbling into the depths of the “Art World” as I thought I knew it. Boy, was I wrong. Chances are you’re familiar with at least one of Deller’s works, but if you’re not, everything you need to know is in this book. His work is always unexpected (who else could’ve possibly envisioned an inflatable Stonehenge on a global tour?), socially conscious and unbelievably fun.
I suppose this is categorised as memoir, but really it feels like a friend speaking with passion and excitement about their art. Deller is an excellent, personable writer who brings so much of his personality to the page. No stuffy art talk here—everyone is welcome to join in the wild fun of it.
This book is joyful, political, engaging and very recommend-able to all, whether or not they’re a self-described art nerd. The physical product itself is also lovely to engage with—a supple matte paperback with colourful French flaps, and every inch of every page full of something to read or look at. Deller has clearly put his all into this project, and that makes it a true joy to read.
Essential reading not just for the culturally curious but for the next generation looking to put their own artistic stamp on the world.

Art is Magic, for sure. And when Jeremy Deller’s involved, it’s an education, irreverently British and a re-telling of the world around us.
