When it comes to discussing the greatest icons in the world of video gaming, the conversation cannot be had without throwing Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man into the mix. Mascots of the Sega and Capcom brands, both have headlined games that have inspired generations of fans for over twenty years. And as they are both published by Archie Comics, it makes plenty of sense to unite the two in an interdimensional crossover.
Dr. Wily makes contact with Dr. Eggman, and the two malicious mechanics conspire in a plan that will reshape entire worlds! Using the power of the Chaos Emeralds, they build themselves an unstoppable army of Robot Masters and Roboticized Masters – Sonic’s corrupted friends! It’s pan-dimensional panic as Sonic and Mega Man race to uncover the doctors’ diabolical plot, save Sonic’s friends and brave the nightmarish landscape of the Skull Egg Zone! Along the way they gain new allies, Mega Man gains all new powers and the stakes keep getting higher until two universe hang in the balance!
For both Sonic and Mega Man fans, this series is a must read and a true celebration of both franchises. We get the customary battle between the main heroes as a result of a misunderstanding and although there is no clear victor, it should satisfy fans who want to see these two throw-down. Almost every character imaginable from both franchises is featured. From fan favourites such as Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, Proto Man and Rush to more obscure additions such as Duo and Blaze the Cat, it is hard to imagine that any fan would be dissatisfied with the roster of characters in this series.
Fans will also get a kick out of the elements of each universe combining with unique results as Tails Man and Knuckles Man join Dr. Wily’s pantheon of evil robots and Mega Man finds himself getting a huge power upgrade courtesy of the Chaos Emeralds. For fans of the Archie Sonic series, this series is even more important as it was the catalyst for the Sonic Genesis saga that revamped the series to its current status quo.
Interpromotional crossovers are always great in comics, but when you have two of video games’ all-time greats involved, it becomes must-read material. Plus it is great preparation for the follow-up Worlds Unite which took the Sega/Capcom crossover even further by featuring characters from Street Fighter, Ghosts’n’Goblins, Golden Axe, Nights and many more. Any Sega or Capcom fan will find plenty to enjoy.
