My Isekai Life 01 review – Square Enix’s latest Fantasy manga.

Launching this month is My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World! – a new isekai manga based on a hit series of light novels. Whether at the office or at home, corporate drone Yuji Sano works all the time. So when his home PC flashes a message about him being summoned to another world, Yuji restarts his machine… only to find that he’s inadvertently accepted the summons! Now in a fantasy world far removed from paperwork and computers, Yuji has just one thing on his mind: waking up from what he thinks is a dream and getting back to the mountain of work he left behind! But this other world has other plans for Yuji, who quickly discovers his Monster Tamer character class allows him to befriend slimes! And thanks to their number, those slimes help him absorb so much magical knowledge that he gains a second character class in the blink of an eye! How will Yuji wield his power now that he’s the greatest sage the realm has ever known?! And what about all that paperwork?!

In the two years since their first publication, Square Enix’s English language manga imprint has built up quite the line-up of titles – particularly when it comes to titles in the isekai and fantasy genre with series like By The Grace of The Gods and The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest becoming bit hits. My Isekai Life looks to follow in those series footsteps and has several themes in common with them, with the obvious one being an everyday man stuck in a boring life in the real world getting transported to an extravagant world that resembles a fantasy video game (not to mention slimes being the first magical creatures encountered). Yuji however does vary a bit from the protagonists of these series in the sense that he is not fully invested in his situation as he is aware of what he has waiting for him unfinished in the real world. Additionally, rather than a group of attractive fantasy women, his group of initial allies consist of the slimes he has befriended who are more communitive than you’d expect.

Taiwanese artist Ponjea (Friendly Land) – who has the distinction of being the first non-Japanese artist to be published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump – does a great job on the art side and adapting the designs from the original light novels. The action is engaging and all the characters are lively. But he particularly excels with the slimes which are packed with plenty of personality and individuality in a refreshing take.

This is another fun isekai and fantasy manga that fans of both genres will find plenty to enjoy in. Square Enix continue to develop their strong line of manga titles. With an anime adaptation soon to be released, now is the perfect time for fans to give this series a look.
